Haywired Posted 9 December , 2019 Share Posted 9 December , 2019 Does anybody know if Lone Copse, near Arras, still exists? It featured in 15 Div. actions 09 to 12 April, 1917. It is just east of Orange Hill. Maps of the time indicate that its location must be pretty close to the line of the High Speed railway in the present day and although 'Streetview' is sparse in this area, the only trees I can see are at Orange Hill Cemetery. Regards to all!
EDWARD1 Posted 9 December , 2019 Share Posted 9 December , 2019 Don't Know if NLS Maps help with the modern map beneath.https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.740988947540817&lat=50.2845&lon=2.8828&layers=101465059&b=
WhiteStarLine Posted 9 December , 2019 Share Posted 9 December , 2019 Hi Haywired, according to preview.tmapper.com it is still treed: Presumably the SW boundary is in the middle distance as shown on Google Street View (linked via the yellow GSV button):
Haywired Posted 10 December , 2019 Author Share Posted 10 December , 2019 Edward1/Whitestarline, Gentemen, Thank you for your assistance. The puzzle is solved. Obviously I did not look far enough to the east. Now everybody will know that I came from the wrong side of the tracks! My interest in the location relates to my late Great Uncle, 2nd Lt. Harry Grindall, who attacked up the hill from the Copse with the 6th Camerons. He was awarded the MC for his actions in leading the attack. Regards and Best Wishes.
