Remembered Today:

Leicestershire regiment and Policeman ID

Here is a tough one, we have I presume a family card with four soldiers of the Leicestershire regiment, only three with badges showing, all without the Hindoostan scroll so territorials, on the rear it is from to 'Mary' from 'Ron' and mentions going into 'Leicester' so a Leicestershire large family with siblings Ronald and Mary and a father who is a policeman, what I was wondering is if this Policeman is traceable through his number which is B164?  I would love to put a name to this family if possible

Small clue.  1/4 and 1/5 Battalions were at Bishops Stortford by November 1914 and off to France March 1915 so one or other of those battalions (source LLT).

May be worth contacting the Leics Regt data base:

https://royalleicestershireregiment.org.uk/database

The Leicestershire record office seem to have personnel records:

The personnel records for the Leicester City police are held at the local records office, may be worth a look?

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N13970613

The page for the Record Office is here http://www.recordoffice.org.uk/

and here is the link to the CD you would need to access http://record-office-catalogue.leics.gov.uk/CalmView/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=T615%2f3%2f6

It does cover City, County and Rutland officers.

Please do report back.

I have rummaged through the 1911 census for Leicester and environs for "police" and either Ron or Mary and the closest I could come up with was Joseph Henry Murgatroyd, a constable with 3 sons of age and a daughter Mary.

Good luck!

i went to the records office today and the only named police officer with the number 164 was a James Hayes, having looked at census details for that name with keyword of Leicester or Leicestershire there was no one that matched up with names or family numbers, the record office did ask if the helmet was Leicester central or surrounding area pattern which means nothing to me

That's a shame.

Presumably he was the 26 year old Constable in the 1911 Census born in Long Newton so unlikely to be your man.

I can't help with the helmet badge, might the Record Office have an expert they may be able to refer too?

Where did you get the number from?

I wonder if your man may have been a Midland Railway Policeman? (BTP wasn't formed until 1949).

From the picture on this link it would appear that the uniform may not fit with what the Midland Railway Policeman was wearing at the time http://british-police-history.uk/show_nav.cgi?force=midland_railway&tab=0&nav=alpha

However, it may be an idea to contact the BTP History Group as they may be able to assist? https://www.btphg.org.uk/?page_id=5
