Have a look at this old thread for clues. I suggest contacting the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum at Woodstock.

Did your family have an Oxfordshire connection ?

For example there was a Roland Henry Sherwood b 1887 Wallingford, died 1957 Henley. on 1939 Register for Henley

Thank you Charlie962

i have looked at there website and it looks like it's for WW2 not 1! And also have to pay for a  archivist to do the work.

I will keep their information and try and move forward.

If there is any more information regarding  Roland H Sherwood  9041 anyone could help me with I would be very grateful for your assistance

Regards Darren

Darren,

based only on his service numbers: which puts him squarely in the 156 (Oxfordshire) Hvy Bty. There is only a surviving single page WD for this Bty, so your best research option is local newspapers of the time or go along in person to the museum.

This particular Hvy Bty was heavily oversubscribed with volunteers when recruiting during Oct to Nov 1915; 250 recruits were retained by the Bty but a further 66 transferred to other units.

The medal rolls indicate he served overseas with 135 Heavy Battery RGA

It shows that the new 6 digit numbers issued in 1917 were based sequentially on the original 4 digit numbers. Papers exist for a 'near-ish number' 9028/297285 Winmill that show:

Attested/enlisted - 1.11.1915

Joined on enlistment - 156 Battery

Posted 135 Battery - 3.11.1915

'Joined for duty' - 5.11.1915

Embarked BEF - 26.5.1916

Your man may have followed the same service path ?

There is a partial unit war diary here

Regards

Chris
