I think Thomas Parker born Shoreditch married a Harriett Marrell in Lambeth 1885

Hi...FYI...Don't know where he fits in but....

Thomas Paker (baptised 26.10.1859) was a soldier in the RI Lancers in 1881. See Census. Parents James F and Emma. 1891 census with his family (wife Harriett Marrell) and a "boarder" James Murrell. I suppose he could be John Thomas Holmes as previously posted, married 1885 in Ireland. Thomas Parker's father was also called John and a Coachman. !!!

Hello Barry, thanks for replying Thomas's father was James Frederick.

Have pretty much ruled out the Albert Parkers born Brighton and Steyning 1882-84, working on the theory that he was orphaned and born under another name

Hi all, still searching but I've discovered from the 1921 census that Albert Parker was born in 1883 (not 1882) in Mhow, Bombay, India - where is father (assuming Thomas) was serving. Where can I find either travel records around that time or any information about the full family and where they may have lived before they left? Ancestry doesn't seem to have any. Thanks.

John

Hi everyone, I've discovered a twist to this tale. My grandfather wasn't born Albert Parker he was born Albert Sheaff, 20/10/1883 in Shoreham.

His father was Thomas Sheaff, born 1840, Sheperdswell / Siberstwold Kent. He was in the Hussars.

So Albert will have served in the Boar War as Albert Sheaff. He may have deserted, even had an earlier family around 1903 then served time in 1914 following which I think he changed his name to Albert Parker about 1915 before joining the army for a 2nd time in Brighton.

My mum always said he had a hole in his hand through being shot which we thought was from the Boar War but that doesn't appear as a distinguishable feature before his 1914 conviction, so perhaps that injury occurred in WW1.

I've got lots of birth certs, census info, etc but any assistance with army records for both people would be really appreciated.

An Albert Sheaff, born Shoreham but living in Brighton and working as a Baker enlisted at a declared age of 18 into 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment on 11/9/1900. This is a Militia attestation. He declares he is serving in the !st Sussex Volunteer Artillery His noumber is 8345/ However, he enlists on 23/10/1900 into the Royal Sussex Regiment and is posted to the Depot in Chichester. The docs declare his father as Thomas Sheaff living at 2 Ham St, Shoreham,

The later attestation number of 6300 (crossed out) and 26370. However this attestion appears to be into the Royal Field Artillery not the RSR - with 66 Battery. He seems to hav been a far from perfect soldier. Eventually charged wih desertion (not for the first time) and discharged with ignomy on 26/3/13. Was in South Africa in 1902. Seem to have been awarded a campaign medal. But that and his service are forfeit due to later desrtion convictions

This man married Lilian Higgins in 1903. Children Lilian and Mary Jane showing

Records available on FMP and I suspect on Fold 3 the ancestry add-on

Thanks for replying Mark. Yep, I've seen the marriage & children information, I've been unable to trace any of those 3 further so far (at all). He married again in 1920 as Albert Parker to Emily Nicholson.

You mention his postings etc, does it all flow consecutively or are there contradictions or impossible situations? I'm trying to get a time-line.

Does FMP have better records than Ancestry?

I find FMP is better for pre-WW1. Ancestry usually has these records but you have to pay extra for the fold3 add-on.

All his service is consecutive until 1913. All his service apart from about 160 days in 1902 is in UK. I can provide the link for the records but you will need access. Sometimes FMP has free trials. The militia and regular army attestations are the same man. Father’s name and address being identical.

Links would be really really helpful, I don't mind paying FMP for membership. This has been a 9 year search with many certificates etc purchased :) Thanks again Mark

Interesting twist as you say.

It seems all the sons of Thomas Sheaff of Shoreham went into the Army, Hussars or RFA. One even gained the DCM in South Africa.

Mark those links were really helpful and in the last 3 weeks or so I've been able to wrap up this 10 year search. For obvious reasons Albert Sheaff changed his name to Albert Parker before re-joining the army in 1915. I have a significant amount of evidence that Sheaff became Parker but there are still some mysteries.

But I thought I'd say thanks to the forum with a really good article that you'll all appreciate about Albert's younger brother Henry Sheaff who received a military funeral in 1917. See below. I'd also be really interested if anyone is aware of how and where Henry sustained his injuries.

There are a few papers For Henry Edward.

but these do not help with cause of death.

But the following pension card does. So TB. Suggests wounding probably not the cause of discharge. Image courtesy fold 3. Aggravated by AS means Aggravated by Active Service.
