Question on Antwerp 1914

Recommended Posts

good afternoon all, could someone tell me if there are any R.N.D diaries that cover the period they were in Antwerp or does anyone have any paperwork or personal diaries on the Brigades or battalions, during the 1914 period in Belgium/Holland. TIA

There are only two RND war diaries for 1914. There are none for the naval battalions.

The diary for the RM Bde HQ is here:- https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7355457

The diary for Chatham Battalion is here:-  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7355458  Both can be downloaded.

In the ADM series at Kew your could order the RND at Antwerp report:-  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3670034   and   https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3670035.

There is also the Court of Enquiry report into the loss of 1st Naval Bde.:-  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3670421

Hello Snowy, this is an extract from from a book that I have about the Collingwoods. It’s a very brief description of their involvement in the MEF to Antwerp. It was written in 1919 by Lt Geary RM who was the Collingwood Battalion QM. Hope it’s of some use.

My Grandfather joined the Collingwoods on their return from Antwerp, fought in the Gallipoli campaign and was wounded during the Turkish counter attack after the 3rd Battle of Krithia on 6th June 1915. If there is any more info you need regarding the Collingwoods that might be contained in the book then please ask.

Thanks Lawryleslie i found the paperwork an interest read. Im so interested in the Rnd but theres not a lot publically about the movements in Belgium. My mother in Laws father was a Clyde volunteer who served firstly in Benbow Btn after Belgium before being transfered to the  Nelsons in Gallipoli.

If you would like a copy of all the parts of Gaskell's history, send me a private message.

Best wishes,

Thanks for the reminder, Snowyred.

I was a bit confused by the apparent link to Benbow Battalion at Antwerp, as Robert Gardner was not there
