hen190782 Posted 21 November , 2019 Share Posted 21 November , 2019 Good Morning The attached certificate records that Lieutenant Edward Workman was mentioned in a Despatch dated 30th November 1915 and I would be interested to find out what period, campaign or battle this Despatch covered. According to The Long, Long Trail, Field Marshal's French's Ninth Depatch was reported in the London Gazette on 1st November and his Tenth Despatch was in July 1916. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Nigel Henderson

Bordercollie Posted 27 November , 2019 Share Posted 27 November , 2019 The despatch you are looking for was published in the London Gazette on 1st January 1916. You will find it at https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29422/supplement/1 It is a very long list of names and you will find Lt Workman on page 55. The list was referred to in the despatch of 15th October which covered operations from 15th June 1915 up to the date of the despatch. That was the 9th despatch published on 30th November which you will find at https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29347/supplement/10760 I suppose technically the despatch published on 1st January 1916 was not a despatch in its own right but more an annex to the 9th despatch. hen190782 Posted 27 November , 2019 Author Share Posted 27 November , 2019 Thanks, Bordercollie. The family has assumed that the MID was awarded for the action of 25th September but, as the certificate refers to his being attached to York and Lancs, the award must relate to his actions before he was transferred to 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. This information narrows down the time window. Nigel
MaxD Posted 27 November , 2019 Share Posted 27 November , 2019 He left 1 Y & L on 24 August 1915 diary here on Ancestry: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/60779/43849_2275_2-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=43849_2275_2-00308 so narrower still! MaxD Posted 4 December , 2019 Share Posted 4 December , 2019 WSC's facsimile signature was on such certificates in his tenure as Secretary of State for War Jan 19 to Feb 21. Max
