verdun Posted 20 November , 2019 Share Posted 20 November , 2019 (edited) RE: 592587 Rfn. Maurice J. Barrett, 18th Bn. London Regt. This soldier's death is shown on CWGC as being 19th August 1917. The Grave Registration Report refers to 16th August, indicating that there is clearly some uncertainty about when he died during this three-day period of fighting in Third Ypres. (I also note that the medal rolls refer to "D.P." - death presumed on 16th.) However, the GRR also states that, at the time of his death, he had been posted from 18th London to 13th Royal Irish Rifles, but when? The Medal Rolls for 18th London show that his active service lasted from 9th Feb to 10th August 1917. Would I be right in thinking that the latter date therefore represents the point at which he was posted?? Many thanks to anyone who can clarify! P.S. I understand from the LLT that, "under the provisions of the Corps Warrant, each battalion of the London Regiment was affiliated to a regular regiment". In this case, the 18th London was affiliated to the Royal Irish Rifles. (Presumably the change from the four to the six-digit TF service number has nothing to do with the posting?)
