ajt55 Posted 18 November , 2019 Share Posted 18 November , 2019 Hello all, Found these a few years ago, been in a drawer since. I've never been able to trace them, can anyone read the writing on either to get an identification for either soldier? Thanks, Andrew

ss002d6252 Posted 18 November , 2019 Share Posted 18 November , 2019 Postcard is 181 Company RE - I think this is the 181st Tunnelling company. Sent to Mary Ridley - I suspect this is here in 1911, https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/2352/rg14_30996_0019_03?pid=36392642&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc%3DuJS2652%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource%26usePUBJs%3Dtrue%26indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D2352%26gsfn%3Dmary%26gsln%3DRidley%26cp%3D0%26msrpn__ftp%3Dwark%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26uidh%3D784%26redir%3Dfalse%26gss%3Dangs-d%26pcat%3D35%26fh%3D0%26h%3D36392642%26recoff%3D%26ml_rpos%3D1&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=uJS2652&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true Craig

ss002d6252 Posted 18 November , 2019 Share Posted 18 November , 2019 Just now, tullybrone said: I’m thinking Quinn? The D in “Dear Mary” doesn’t look like the first letter in the queried surname? Steve Could be Quinn, if he'd stretched the letters out slightly. Looking at 'France' the 'n' does look like it. Craig
Keith Brannen Posted 18 November , 2019 Share Posted 18 November , 2019 I, too, believe it is Quinn. There is a George Quinn who was Northumberland Fusiliers and then Royal Engineers, might be him (and, therefore, makes sense the card with a change of address). https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1262/30850_A001276-01376?pid=5584014&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc%3Dyu61423132%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource%26usePUBJs%3Dtrue%26indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1262%26gsfn%3Dgeorge%26gsln%3Dquinn%26cp%3D0%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26uidh%3Dyu6%26redir%3Dfalse%26msT%3D1%26gss%3Dangs-d%26pcat%3D39%26fh%3D39%26h%3D5584014%26recoff%3D%26ml_rpos%3D40&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=yu61423132&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true

daggers Posted 20 November , 2019 Share Posted 20 November , 2019 Shoulder title looks like ‘Gloster’. Crown rank badges on cuffs: warrant officer. Sam Browne belt: perhaps WO1. Cant’t see the cap badge. D

Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 20 November , 2019 Share Posted 20 November , 2019 I agree. But if the forename begins with a capital 'H', then the second letter must be a lower case 'u'. In which case the forename (Free BMD 1885-1899) must be Hugh, Hubert or Humphrey. I don't think it is any of the 3 or a diminuitive.
Western SMT Posted 25 November , 2019 Share Posted 25 November , 2019 On the photo the top line is ‘Sincerely Yours’ or just Your, faint lines above and below the soldier’s left breast button could be the remains of the Y with a lazy hand of write at the end of each word makes it difficult. As for the name, does the surname start with a P or even a D, as mentioned by ‘helpjpl’ it could be Pearce. It could be Peabody, Pearee or Pearel 3rd letter could even be a d. His first name could be a number of things but Hu is favourite at the moment.
