Remembered Today:

Regiment identification

Guest

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon,

I’m hoping that someone can identify the regiment shown in the attached picture. An aunt showed me this and we have no idea who sent it. I am also puzzled by the word “shot” in the message, so if anyone can shed light on that also, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

There are an assortment of cap badges in the photo’, do you know which man is Mick?  It may well be a training course with men from a number of regiments.

No idea what he means by “the Shot”.  Unless it is Aldershot.

Certainly Middlesex Regiment, maybe Quuens/Buffs/Berkshire or Monmouth’s.

1.Postmark is Folkestone. Building is named Eastcliff House. East Cliff was a part of Folkestone. There is a hint of something written large across the building above the door height.

But I couldn't google up anything further.

2. That cap badge (2nd left under downpipe) was, I thought, perhaps R Sussex ? But I cannot see top of plume.

3. Shot-  yes the most obvious is an abreviation for Aldershot, given censorship. I haven't heard it used meaning 'the Front'.

The chap seated in front of him has a cap badge that looks like the Northamptonshire Regiment, if he signed up where his dear old Mum lived . . .

“The shot” was Army speak for Aldershot.  The vast majority of the men are Middlesex Regt and Buffs (East Kent).  I agree that others look like Northants, maybe Hants and possibly a lone R Sussex, although I too see it as partly obscured. The bulk of cap badges suggest a Home Counties formation.

Hants less likely: no Hampshire battalion in the 12th (Eastern) Division.

I’m sure you’re right, it was really an alternative to the Northants shape.

Possibly, it has the right circular shape.
