trbl_tommy Posted 15 November , 2019 Share Posted 15 November , 2019 (edited) Dear GWF Forum, I have a personal diary for F/Sgt A. Waple RFC for the year 1917. There are legible daily entries recording squadron activities/actions of flying officers, etc and have noted that some entries include shorthand text which I would like help in translating please. Please see attachments for entries dated 03 May 1917, 29 May 1917, 02 June 1917, 15 Oct 1917 The entry dated 02 June 1917 is very interesting, I believe on this date Billy Bishop was awarded a VC! I believe the diary entry 02/06/1917 reads... "Joynson-Hicks and Sir Chas? (Charles) Nicholson visited the squadron. At dawn Capt Bishop went out over a German aerodrome 17 miles ?(shorthand text)?. He saw 7 machines coming up. He fired at them on the ground and then 4 came up. He crashed 3 of them and then got clean away. He went down to 50 ft over the aerodrome several times. His machine was riddled with revolver and machine gun bullets when he got back." I hope someone may be able to help with translation of the shorthand text please, Thanks, Edited 15 November , 2019 by trbl_tommy

Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 15 November , 2019 Share Posted 15 November , 2019 Yes, they certainly look like shorthand, My understanding is that there are several different versions, all differing greatly from each other.
sueburden Posted 15 November , 2019 Share Posted 15 November , 2019 It is Pitman's shorthand. Unfortunately I can only transcribe odd words which would not help much. Sue
