Guest Posted 14 November , 2019 Share Posted 14 November , 2019 Good Evening All, New to all of this so any help appreciated. Trying to locate any information on the service of my Great Grandfather Frederick Thomas Tustain 6633 3 Company 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. KIA 29/09/1916 Lesboeufs. Again, any help would be appreciated, even hints on where to begin my search. Regards Steve D

KIA 29/09/1916 Lesboeufs Given the above I'm guessing you have already been visiting the CWGC site https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/543762/tustain,-/ as a starter From the CWGC site you can see a "Concentration of graves" form which indicates where his body was recovered from Sheet 57c.T.4.b.3.5 [to the NE of Lesboeuf village] - this is probably likely to be close to where he died http://www.tmapper.com/mapping/showmap.php However here's a site with a photo of his CWGC headstone at Lesboeufs https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56558216/f-t-tustain Thanks to the saving/digitising/publishing of pension records by the Western Front Association / Ancestry (Fold 3) there is a Pension Card for him: Only new info is that his widow Agnes also had two middle names = Agnes Mary Frances Tustain The War Diary of the 1CG will probably give you info on their whereabouts before and at his date of death, but is unlikely to name him individually [I'm hopeless at pulling up these WD easily but I am sure you will get a quick response from another GWF pal if it's survived then its usually available via Ancestry - to which I do not currently subscribe] His Medal Index Card is available at The National Archives https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D5655521 [in B/W] or Ancestry [in colour] etc. = First theatre of war = France on 3.2.15 so eligible for teh 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal Likely to be a Medal Roll too And an entry in "Soldiers Died in the Great War". Probably an Army Register of Soldier's Effects Newspapers where his parents lived and/or where he lived when married may have reports on him Edit - Sadbrewer has just given you a start with newspapers! Happy hunting ... Edited 14 November , 2019 by Matlock1418 edit
sotonmate Posted 14 November , 2019 Share Posted 14 November , 2019 (edited) Not easy to find the 1 CG War Diary on Ancestry UK for this period. An earlier one, used prior to the Guards Division being created, appears readily, even with incorrect dates. It is probable that it hides among a group, possibly in the 3 Guards Brigade Diary. You can buy a copy here for £3.50: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7351842 If you were interested in his earlier service, he first landed in France with 1 CG on 3 Feb 1915: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7351891 That one IS easily found on Ancestry UK if you have a sub,or access to a Library. Coldstreamer Posted 17 November , 2019 Share Posted 17 November , 2019 and being in Australia (i assume) is why took him longer to get back to UK if he was still on reserve - I have medals to a Pte Amos, a pre war soldier called back to service for the war also from Australia
