Hello and welcome to the forum

I have edited your thread title to hopefully attract more expert interest.

It would be useful if you could let us know what you already know about Joseph so that efforts are not duplicated.

Good luck with your research

David

War Office casualty list of 21 February 1915 has him as missing in action. Highly likely to have been captured during First Battle of Ypres. By the end of 7 November 1914 there was virtually nothing left of the battalion. Had landed at Zeebrugge with the battalion.

He enlisted 20 October 1911 according to the roll of the Silver War Badge.

Red Cross POW records say that he had been with "A" Company. He was held at Altdamm and returned home in 1917.

He was given a disablement pension for deafness and facial paralysis when discharged on 7 April 1917.

His pension record card mentions 9587 William Downing. A brother?

I have done a little research on a chap who was in the 1st South Staffs , it might give you a insight into the movements of the battalion .

Pte , 8472 , John Howles , 1st South Staffs

16.11.08 - enlisted at Litchfield

09.02.11 - posted with 1st Bn to Gibralter

14.01.13 - posted with 1st Bn to South Africa

Aug 14   - returned to the UK

19.09.14 - arrived in UK and Bn joined the 7th Div at Lydhurst

04.10.14 - disembarked Zeebrugge

07.11.14 - reported missing in action at Zillebeke, nr Ypres

01.12.14 - reported POW in Germany ( Altdamm )

16.12.18 - repatriated UK

Hope this helps , looks like John Howles may have had a similar journey as your Grandfather ?     DD

In brief then ...

Joseph DOWNING, 9035, S. Staffs

WFA pension cards at WFA/Fold3 identify his father: Joseph [of Cannock].  Brother: William.  Widow: Marion Emily.

He provides an address in Bilston on his disability claim pension ledger index card c.1921.

And another card for his brother, William, also has a S WILD 12735 [but the latter's MIC and other pension cards have Samuel Thomas WILD, 12738]
