Remembered Today:

Who are they?

Hi

I found this group photo in my father's collection and have no idea where to start - I haven't seen it before. There seems to be a few different cap badges. He would usually have Ireland based pictures, but this doesn't look like it.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Majority may be Army Service Corps judging by badges. Possibly Horse Transport due to the jodhpurs.

With the exception of just four infantry officers in the second row from rear (left to right): Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Lancashire Fusiliers, and Cheshire Regiment, they are all Army Service Corps officers, along with a sprinkling of ASC other ranks (probably SNCOs) in the rear row.

It seems to be pre-war as all the officers wear the initial, 1902 variant of the officers pattern drab service dress uniform, with its distinctive closed collar and twisted cord shoulder straps.  The cuff rank was the second style adopted specifically for that uniform.  The officers and other ranks with medal ribbons are mainly 2nd Boer War veterans with Queen’s and King’s South Africa medals.

As a guess the presence of the infantry officers among so many ASC suggests that the photo might show the staff of a Transport Officer course, but that is pure speculation on my part.

I believe that the SNCO standing at rear left is a staff sergeant instructor of equitation (a ‘Roughrider’), as beneath his crown it is just possible to see the top of the spur badge that marks his specialisation.

The main transport officer school was at Aldershot, but there might have been an offshoot at the Curragh, in Ireland, I’m unsure.  My guess would be Aldershot.

Thank you to all who answered.

I am in awe of Frogsmile's knowledge!

My father had this in his collection here in Ireland, but I now need to find out why. He's 98 and usually can't provide answers, but I'll give him a go.

Thanks again.

Peter
