suspect the 'trouble with his chest' more likely to have been TB or some other respiratory disease contracted in the camps. 

Most if not all released POWs suffered from malnutrition.

Yes that is correct, the 1st Canadian Division was in that battle & suffered heavy casualties from the gas but held their position.
