algy Posted 31 October , 2019 Share Posted 31 October , 2019 Does anyone know where Fort 'Fireworks' was situated in September 1915 please, I believe it may have been somewhere near Laventie.1915
Chris_Baker Posted 31 October , 2019 Share Posted 31 October , 2019 Algy, it would help to know if this reference relates to a particular unit. Does it come from a war diary, for example?
WhiteStarLine Posted 31 October , 2019 Share Posted 31 October , 2019 There was a Fireworks Post near Laventie. Somewhere in the larger square on the LHS but not shown specifically in the trench map.
algy Posted 31 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 31 October , 2019 Chris the unit in question was the 11 (Service) Battalion Rifle Brigade. WSLine, interesting to see you have it as near to 'Riflemans Avenue'.

Howard Posted 1 November , 2019 Share Posted 1 November , 2019 (edited) I also found this one. 1915 British maps often have no British trenches, hence the 1916 secret edition above but I just found this one with hand-drawn trenches. Provisional Edition 1915 Edition A Trenches corrected to 21st July 1915. It is very important to note the shifted grid. Some 1915 maps had a grid that is shifted as much as 150 yards relative to 1916 maps. If you want a GPS position you must first mark the point on a 1916 map using triangulation between fixed points such as road junctions then use that 1916 map reference in Bill's excellent tmapper. The 1915 maps were re-drawn from horrid French 1;80,000 maps from the 19th Century, that required an emergency re-survey which must have been dangerous with snipers all around watching in awe as bods stood still by a theodolite.
