What is this?

See photo below.

I found it on Mort Homme, Verdun, just in front of the original German front line, so if it is from WW1 it is most likely to be German or French, with an outside chance it could be USA in origin. The verdigris which has formed suggests that the cap at least was copper or brass. The capsule is encased in the remains of a wire guard over which there could have been some metal or leather sheath. The capsule or phial appears intact and full. 

Any suggestions?

It is a battery, below are two relic batteries from a British WW1 dump site. I imagine they were generic to all nations, like a AA or AAA would be today.
