Possibly your best bet is the various books by Lt-Col Edward Warren Caulfield Sandes, R.E. in particular The Engineer in India, I think a reprint is available through Naval and Military Press. There is also the Military Engineer in India.  Sandes wrote extensively about the various Sapper units in India, and the Indian Sappers and Miners.

Usually R.E officers seconded to the Public Works Department, I think.

The History of the Corps of Royal Engineers will make reference, although a quick look at the index to Vol 4 refers to his Military Engineer in India.  It is available on CD from the Sappers Institution at Chatham.

Whilst the PWD had numerous military officers attached to them, their responsibilities were different from the Military Works Service. The PWD looked after Indian civil infrastructure as the title suggests. MWS looked after the military estate per my post above.

Dear Barry,

Interesting! I was only aware of the one son Michael John Davis.

He seems to have sold the beautiful "Stonehills" in Surrey, which was on the market for one, or was in two, million GBP, after our gallant and capable Exec. Engineer died...

The Indian-sounding one in NJ would have probably had an Image of the elusive William John Davis - isn't it frustrating?!

As usual, you have done well - many thanks in name of the GWF community and me in particular!

Kindest regards,

Hi Kim,

Have sent a PM to the tree owner in New Jersey.  Hopefully she will respond. Further check shows Phoebe had a daughter not a son, I think the tree owner may be her.

Regards Barry

Hi Kim and all,

Have just had a message from the tree owner in New Jersey. She doesn't have a photo of William John Davis but does say she has  pictures of "his son".

Which one I don't know ...yet.

She said she has a vague feeling that her cousin "Dinah Nandi" who is in Australia did speak to someone from Germany! Was that you?

Can follow it up if you wish. PM me again with your e-mail add. Looks like the nearest we can get.

Regards Barry
