JAMES WEBLEY

Private 10092 "D" Coy. 1st Bn., King's Shropshire Light Infantry

who died on Sunday 25 October 1914 . Age 19 .

Additional Information: Son of Mrs. Eliza Webley, of The Branches, Colwall, Malvern, Worcestershire.

Cemetery: PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium

Jim Webley, my Granny Price's little brother, known by his family as 'Ginger', joined up with his brother John ('Jack') pre-War, probably around 1912. Landed at St Nazaire on 10 September, 1914, en route to the Front, he disappeared from this world barely 6 weeks later, 105 years ago today, whilst in a relatively 'quiet' sector. Jack survived the War.

Makes you wonder how brother Jack must have felt. Puts me in mind of the passage in There's a Devil in the Drum in which the author's brother disappears, never to be seen again.

Poor young Ginger: all that hope extinguished.
