agedpink1 Posted 23 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 23 October , 2019 The mans name was Wilfred Lowe
MaxD Posted 23 October , 2019 Share Posted 23 October , 2019 (edited) Does he have another initial? There is a WT Lowe who was in the RFC fairly early (went to France in Oct 1915).(Edit - this is William Thomas) His good conduct badge indicates over two year's service. There is also a 2/Lieutenant Wilfred Lowe Royal Air Force (all serving RFC men became RAF on 1 April 1918). Do either of these ring any family bells? There are no detailed service records for the former, the latter would have to be copied (and paid for). charlie962 Posted 23 October , 2019 Share Posted 23 October , 2019 Is this the same man referred to in this old thread, post 7, where ref is made to an RFC man with a GS stripe and wound stripe ??
RFT Posted 24 October , 2019 Share Posted 24 October , 2019 21 hours ago, agedpink1 said: Can anyone tell me anything about this uniform? Regards Richard He wears a 1914 Pattern jacket with horizontal pockets and also shoulder straps. It has been suggested that the Good Conduct chevron may not have been issued after the start of the war. Perhaps he was an early recruit?
squirrel Posted 24 October , 2019 Share Posted 24 October , 2019 The wound stripe was introduced in 1916 so the photograph is not earlier.
MaxD Posted 24 October , 2019 Share Posted 24 October , 2019 WT Lowe is William Thomas Lowe so not our man (source - RAF records). Post amended. Max
MaxD Posted 24 October , 2019 Share Posted 24 October , 2019 agedpinkone Hopefully you have looked at the earlier thread that charlie962 identifies. Any chance that the 2/Lt Wilfred Lowe is your man (commissioned from a cadet unit (didn't mean he was a young man necessarily) in July 1918. Hs officer's file has not been digitised so if he served in the ranks previously, that fact may be hidden there. Max
