paulgranger Posted 18 October , 2019 Share Posted 18 October , 2019 I see from other sources that the Cloth Hall is to undergo substantial refurbishing. It will involve removing and rebuilding the central tower, will cost 15 million Euros, and will take ten years. No idea when it will start. AOK4 Posted 18 October , 2019 Share Posted 18 October , 2019 Hello, I didn't know until I saw your post. The tower won't be removed completely, just the steeples of the 4 small towers and central tower of the Cloth Hall according to what I read. It seems they have now started doing some tests how to clean the walls, but the actual works are supposed to start in 2020 and would take 10 years. I fear that it won't be finished in 10 years... Aurel Sercu Posted 18 October , 2019 Share Posted 18 October , 2019 Paul, Yes, Jan is right. No need to "panic". :-) And the belfry tower works removing the spire and the four small towers of the belfry probably will take one and a half years.. The complete restoration of Belfry and Cloth Hall (inside and outside) will take approx. 10 years indeed.. But ... during the exterior works the sight will not be "saai" (boring). "We will make it an attraction, by projecting images. What images ? We won't tell now, it's meant to be a surprise." Meanwhile Yper Museum and In Flanders Fields Museum will remain accessible as much as possible. Aurel
Marilyne Posted 18 October , 2019 Share Posted 18 October , 2019 Saw that too this morning in the news. It's going to be an interesting sight for the coming years. M.
Michael Thomson Posted 19 October , 2019 Share Posted 19 October , 2019 Does anybody yet know when in 2020 the work will begin? We're planning our first trip to Ypres in May 2020 and it would be a pity to miss seeing the Cloth Hall in all its splendour.

They have only handed in the file a few days ago, so the administration has to approve everything, I assume. I even wonder if they will be able to start in 2020. Buffnut453 Posted 20 October , 2019 Share Posted 20 October , 2019 Likewise, we plan to visit Ypres for the first time next year so it would be good to know when this work will start.
sassenach Posted 20 October , 2019 Share Posted 20 October , 2019 Don't let it put you off going. The Cloth Hall is magnificent, of course, but there are so many other reasons to visit Ypres and the Salient.

So those who life in/near Ypres should prepare themselves to be descended upon by my small(ish) clan!
