Remembered Today:

Unusual British Leather Pouch

OLD ROBIN HOOD

Recommended Posts

Greetings from the Royal Forest of Sherwood where the Autumn chill is now in the air.

For some years now I have had this leather pouch laying around.  It is similar to the British 1939 pattern ammunition pouch usually attributed to the Home Guard.

However, it is somewhat larger: 9 1/4 inches in height by 5 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches deep. Internally it is reinforced with stiff red fibre board. It is held together by tinned rivets.

The reason that I believe it is WW1 is that the buckle at the top is plainly for an 08 pattern strap.  The only markings which are on the back, is a stamped 020 also a broad arrow

underneath which is 117. I have included in the images one which shows a 39 pattern pouch for comparison.

So, if any of you good folk out there can shed any light on what this pouch might be I would be most grateful.
