Jools mckenna Posted 14 October , 2019 Share Posted 14 October , 2019 (edited) I had this postcard for a while now and I'm now interested to see if the sender can be identified. The sender is called Jim(probably in the RA) and is writing to Master Jack Carter. They talk of sending letters to each other and says 'love to all', so it might be possible Jim and Jack are related. So my thinking is that if Jack can be identified then Jim might be able to be tracked through him. IPT Posted 14 October , 2019 Share Posted 14 October , 2019 I'd say the recipient, Master Jack Carter, was Jack Harold Irwin Carter, and the author was 955120 James Talbot Carter, RFA.

Thanks IPT. I'll fix the title. Here is his MiC. Edited 14 October , 2019 by Jools mckenna
IPT Posted 14 October , 2019 Share Posted 14 October , 2019 (edited) James Talbot Carter has papers which confirm the address, and show that he joined the 6th London Brigade RFA in May 1909. He won the MM as 662 with A/236 Bde. James WIlliam David Talbot Carter died 11/7/1947. He was a dentist. Jack was born 1/9/1905 and died in 1989. I think he was Jim's nephew. Can you make out the postmark? 20th July 1914? Edited 14 October , 2019 by IPT

Very interesting. Yes, it's the 20th July 1914 (just 8 days before Austro-Hungry declares war on Serbia.) IPT Posted 14 October , 2019 Share Posted 14 October , 2019 Yes, looks like he was away with 6th London Brigade, only weeks before they were mobilized. James worked with his elder brother, John Irwin Carter, who was Jack's father. They are all at 358 Brixton Road on the 1911 census.
