Remembered Today:

Propaganda

Both sides in war " Paint" the enemy as heartless and evil, easier to get troops to keep shooting the enemy if they do not think the enemy is just like you, drafted into what seemed an endless war

The truth is........

Greetings from Sherwood Forest.

Let us remember that the Prussians had God on their side , their belt buckles said so.

So what, each side believed they had god on their side. Didn't the British have 'Dieu et mon droit'?

The OP mages a very good point and the photos poignantly back it up.

Bob Dylan's "With God On Our Side" neatly sums up the subsequent posts.

Greetings from Sherwood again.

My previous reply was meant to be IRONIC.  The heading of the post being 'Propaganda'.

At time of war those in charge liked to dehumanise the enemy.  It would hardly be the thing for the fighting men of one side

to regard the enemy as being the same as them. Men with wives, children and families and the same love of life that they had.

Look at some of the early British WW1 posters and the way the Germans are portrayed.  So, if a war can be made an almost holy crusade

against evil with God on their side then so much the better. This has certainly been the case for well over a thousand years. As AOK4 correctly says

we British did indeed wear a belt buckle bearing the words  'Dieu et mon droit' ( God and my Right).  I think that all other combatants over the centuries

had a similar idea.  There must have been times when God himself felt quite confused about whose side he was actually on.
