UncleBourbon Posted 10 October , 2019 Share Posted 10 October , 2019 Reading about the stand of 'Fray Bentos' I see much mention of the courage of the British crew and their names. However, the Germans who were infantry without anti-tank weaponry endlessly attempting to combat a tank in their line sound very courageous themselves, and I've yet to find any names of Germans killed during the engagement. I would definitely be interested in learning their names, if available.
johntaylor Posted 10 October , 2019 Share Posted 10 October , 2019 Hi, it's an interesting idea but I don't think there's any way of linking individual German casualties to the Fray Bentos action. Although it's the most celebrated, Fray Bentos was just one of eight tanks from F Battalion which took part in a full-scale attack on August 22, 1917 (also involving C and D Battalions of the Tank Corps). The defensive troops were from a number of German regiments, and while it should be possible to find a list of casualties for each regiment on that day, it wouldn't be possible to say one death or another was caused by Fray Bentos. That's my view - always happy to be proved wrong! John
