Dazscuba Posted 6 October , 2019 Share Posted 6 October , 2019 Thanks for all the info found on the previous brother who was KIA. I am researching 7 brothers who are a friends family. looking for war diaries for 13th Batt East Yorks Reg for date of 13th Nov 1916 and any link to Ancestry would be appreciated. Hopefully then I can get a trench map for same time. i know John Robert Farrah, 13/877 will not be in there but to find what was occurring on the month he went missing KIA would help thanks
Mark1959 Posted 6 October , 2019 Share Posted 6 October , 2019 (edited) See here An attack by the British at Serre on the Somme. Maps and some reports (some very faint) after Nov Diary - run through unti start of Dec diary. He appears as missing on a list of casualties on page 754 on ancestry The loses were colossal and run pages 753-760 Some service papers survive Edited 6 October , 2019 by Mark1959
Dazscuba Posted 6 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 6 October , 2019 Reading the diary I sounds horrific with a vast amount of losses in KIa, wounds and missing. The fighting sounds really bad and the mud so so bad. i believe that this is south of Serre can you just confirm this so I can look at a trench map. Dazscuba Posted 6 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 6 October , 2019 Due to there not being any map ref I can’t seem to find Serre at all. Where is it near so I can maybe get to it from a larger location
Mark1959 Posted 6 October , 2019 Share Posted 6 October , 2019 Look for Serre-les-Puisieux. East of Bapaume. North of Beaumont Hamel. The map on page 767 seems to be base on a trench map. See numbers on squares. Looking at the maps looks like we are taking just SE or SSE of Serre.

MaxD Posted 8 October , 2019 Share Posted 8 October , 2019 The maps in the Div diary are worth a look, much clearer and more of them, example: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/60779/43112_2357_0-00071?pid=503845&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc%3DJsm8772%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource%26usePUBJs%3Dtrue%26indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D60779%26cp%3D0%26_F0007CF4%3Deast%20yorkshire%26_F0007CF4_x%3D1%26_F00088EF%3D13th%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26uidh%3Daoc%26redir%3Dfalse%26gss%3Dangs-d%26pcat%3D39%26fh%3D34%26h%3D503845%26recoff%3D%26ml_rpos%3D35&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Jsm8772&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.160469309.1655472452.1570384087-1160288830.1525181781#?imageId=43112_2341_0-00744 Max
