Remembered Today:

What style water bottle carriers were used by the Cavalry?

Hello,

I'm researching the kit of cavalry during the war but one thing I'm currently at an impasse over is the water bottle carrier. I've seen examples of the leather carriers, but did they also have a web sling style of water bottle carrier as well?

Thanks in advance.

It would appear that the Canadian Cavalry did . . .

Interesting! The example I found online has both a web carrier (not the leather one) in addition to the web strap. If I were to take a guess is that this is a P08 water bottle carrier with a P37 brace or strap.

Hi

it looks like a 37 pattern carrier also, the 08 carrier is manufactured from 2” wide webbing and the 37 from 1” wide.

British cavalry would wear the 03 leather pattern carrier which does have a 2” wide section of v twill or herring bone canvas in the mid section so as to distribute the weight of the bottle. The bottle is regularly seen to be worn on the right shoulder with the bottle high under the left arm to avoid it moving when riding. The bandolier was worn over the two of the strap.

Manufacture of the P1903 Mk II leather carrier continued through WW2 for personnel using horse transport. For the UK a new web equipment WE1940 was adopted for cavalry but not issued extensively. It does not appear to have been issued to Commonwealth troops.

That appears to be either a RN 1919 Pattern water bottle carrier or a WWII Canadian variation 1937 Pattern front-fastening water bottle carrier. The brace looks like a mid/late WWII stitched together type 1937 Pattern brace.
