Tina Bilbe Posted 4 October , 2019 Share Posted 4 October , 2019 I am researching RNAS Ratings who served at Kingsnorth Airship Station. I have just come across Douglas Ruddiman from Aberdeen who is listed as Late RND CZ/3407. I presume 3407 was his service number, and that the RN in RND is Royal Navy. Does the D stand for Department? and can anyone enlighten me as to what the CZ suffix was used for?

horatio2 Posted 4 October , 2019 Share Posted 4 October , 2019 CZ (or Clyde Z) is for Clyde Division RNVR ratings who enlisted for duration of the war only after 7 September 1914. Their 'Z' prefix differntiated them from pre-war men of Clyde Division who were identifed by their Company No. e.g. Clyde 3/1234 (or C3/1234). Douglas Ruddiman was entered into the Royal Naval Division and served in Howe Battalion of the RND at Gallipoli from August to October 1915. He was invalided back to UK and transferred from the RND to the RNAS as F.19353 in August 1916. His RND record can be downloaded from Kew here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7251151
