veklee Posted 3 October , 2019 Share Posted 3 October , 2019 good afternoon does anyone know when soldiers effects were recorded (year ) as I have a query with cwgc about numbers on the grave of h s howes the following is my mail to cwgc and there reply hope this is understandable thanks barryH O Howes[Harold O Howes] Regiment or Corps:Royal Field Artillery, Army Service CorpsRegimental Number:87596, S4/199031andName:Harold Stanley HowesBirth Place:Stratford, London, E.Death Date:26 Jul 1917Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field ArtilleryRegimental Number:94307cwgc give the number 87596 for Harold osward on there site as the correct number as this is the number on soldiers effects every where else gives 94307 this includes a correction in in newspapers saying the number is 94307.ive been in touch with cwgc and they say quoteAs mentioned in my previous email, the documentation I have available to me agrees with the information we presently record on our database and our website. The soldiers effects register has an authority date initially of the 31st August 1918 however then re-authorised on the 31st October 1919 presumably due to lack of contact from the pension receiver, his father Harold. ss002d6252 Posted 3 October , 2019 Share Posted 3 October , 2019 The effects records were created across the whole war - typically it was undertaken within a few months of death (the war gratuity entry was added retrospectively to deaths pre 1918). At the point of creation of the CWGC and Effects records they would be working from separate documentation - the effects records information went back and forwards with the War Office and paymaster before being settled so very few errors in numbering crept in. It is possible that at some point he did hold a number 94307 as men could, in some cases, be renumbered. Craig
RaySearching Posted 3 October , 2019 Share Posted 3 October , 2019 (edited) What we have here are two different soldiers with similar names whose service numbers have been inexplicitly mixed up on the medal rolls Harold Stanley Howes CWGC entry Effects record medal roll for Harold Stanley Howes Gur 94307 RFA Medal roll for Harold Oswald Howes 87596 RFA at this point in time I would conclude that CWGC entry is correct and an error was made mixing up the two soldiers named Howes when the medal rolls were compiled if you look at Harold Oswalds M.I.C his medals were returned for adjustment Ray Edit images courtesy of Ancestry Edited 3 October , 2019 by RaySearching
