I am working on an account left by a sergeant in the 6th (Service) Battalion of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in Egypt, Syria and Palestine. In the account there was a list of actions he was involved in. I've identified some of these and added the contemporary spelling and the dates of the actions. A few however I've not been able to tie down and am hoping someone here can help with the rest.

(1)    Hannah [5 April 1916]
(2)    Fulahyah [Fallayieh, 5 April 1916]
(3)    Sanaiyat [Sannaiyat, 9 April 1916]
(4)    Esin [Es Sinn, 19 April 1916]
(5)    Shoomra Bend [??]
(6)    Licorice Factory [??]
(7)    No. 43 Position [??]
(8)    Kut [28 September 1916]
(9)    Bighalah [Bagailah, 26 February 1917]
(10)     Aziziah [Aziziyah, 2 March 1917]
(11)     Osetphon [Ctesiphon, 6 March 1917]
(12)     Diyalah [7 March 1917]
(13)     Baghdad [11 March 1917]
(14)     Sindia [Sindiyeh, 8 May 1917]
(15)     Dely Abass [Deli Abbas, 18 October 1917]
(16)     Kara Tepeh [Quarah Tapah, 6 December 1917]
(17)     Silahyah [Suhaniyeh, 28 December 1917]
(18)     Douza Kourmatly [??]

Are the locations of 18 & 20 not the same? Can't help with the others, I'm afraid.

Hello Roger. Shoomra Bend = Shumran Bend.

I heard "No. 43" before but can't pinpoint it at the moment.

It may not be the same location with Tuz Khurmatli/Tuzhurmatu which is located at 34°52'52.12" 44°37'46.18". It's probably the village called Tazehurmatu (35°18'06.46" 44°20'13.83"), 50 km north of Tuz Khurmatli/Tuzhurmatu.

I think this is Tavuk (also known as Tawuq or Daquq), a village halfway between Tuzhurmatu and Tazehurmatu. Coordinates: 35°08'26.09" 44°27'27.86"

Altun Köprü (35°45'03.68" 44°09'41.47") and Narin Köprü are different places. Narin Köprü is to the south of Kara Tepe, near Lake Hamrin.

The book "The Neglected War/The Bastard War/The First Iraq War has maps and accounts of battles in "Mespot"

The British Official History also has accounts and maps. It's online but can't remember where.

My Great Great Uncle, Albert Kelshaw was killed on 9th April 1916. All I had was Mesopotomia, but now I think it's Sanaiyat or Sannaiyat.

  • RogerWill changed the title to 6th Kings Own Lancaster Regt actions in Syria, Palestine, etc

I have to ask, gents - why is the thread title about 6th Loyals while the text is about 6th King’s Own?

Phil, my mistake here. The thread title should have read 6th Kings Own and is now corrected. I suspect the slip crept in for personal reasons: my great grandfather served with the 6th Loyals and was KIA 23 December 1916 in Mesopotamia.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this question  so  far. Good progress has been made and the revised list of actions now looks like this:

image.png.5d2ca5d049033cc392075609e818a3d6.png

So, if the above looks correct to you, then the outstanding questions relate to when the 6th Kings Own took part in the actions at:

No. 43 Position

Dely  Abass

Kourmatly

Correct spellings and additional information on any of the actions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Roger
