Remembered Today:

German steel bugle

Picked up this bugle today from a local picker friend. Apparently it was a bring-back by a Canadian soldier. It appears to be made mostly if steel, and is painted feldgrau inside and out. It is marked with the manufacturer’s name and is dated 1918. I’m used to seeing these in brass, and have not run into a gray one before. Would this one have been used in battle?

Are you sure on the date? That looks very much like a 1940's date to me from that photograph...

Apparently the firm were in business from the late 19th century until just after WW2, eg:

WW1 markings seem to have I for the start of "Instrumenten" - WW2 seem to have used J, which matches your marking.

The date looks like 1943 or 1948 (less likely I would have thought). Still a nice piece and could well have been brought back by a Canadian soldier, just from a different war.
