Hallibag Posted 29 September , 2019 Share Posted 29 September , 2019 Picked up this bugle today from a local picker friend. Apparently it was a bring-back by a Canadian soldier. It appears to be made mostly if steel, and is painted feldgrau inside and out. It is marked with the manufacturer’s name and is dated 1918. I’m used to seeing these in brass, and have not run into a gray one before. Would this one have been used in battle?

Andrew Upton Posted 30 September , 2019 Share Posted 30 September , 2019 (edited) Apparently the firm were in business from the late 19th century until just after WW2, eg: https://www.weitze.net/militaria/36/III_Reich_Signalhorn__302436.html Edited 30 September , 2019 by Andrew Upton
Andrew Upton Posted 30 September , 2019 Share Posted 30 September , 2019 WW1 markings seem to have I for the start of "Instrumenten" - WW2 seem to have used J, which matches your marking.
NorthStaffsPOW Posted 30 September , 2019 Share Posted 30 September , 2019 The date looks like 1943 or 1948 (less likely I would have thought). Still a nice piece and could well have been brought back by a Canadian soldier, just from a different war.
Hallibag Posted 30 September , 2019 Author Share Posted 30 September , 2019 Thanks for the replies. I had a close look at the date with a loupe and it is, in fact, 1943. Wrong war!
