Dear All, I would be grateful for help in trying to identify 4 officer casualties of the above regiment in 1914. As a number may be Field Commissions in Autumn 1914 info scarce.

1) Leonard Hatton - Field Commission Oct 1914- former sergeant - wounded 20th Oct 1914

2) ??? Deane - invalided/sick - 23rd Nov 1914

3) ??? Burrows - invalided/sick - 25th Nov 1914

4) C de W Taylor - Special Reserve, commissioned Mar 1914 - 2nd Lt - invalided/sick 22nd Nov 1914.  What do his initial stand for?

Any bio details on the above would be great DoB/schools etc.  Plus deployment dates if relevant.  I've been looking for ages and no luck.

Best, Nick

Given the dates involved it would seem likely promoted NCO’s would have been serving in the ranks at the time of the 1911 Census.

At some point in 1911 the 20th Hussars returned from Ireland to England but possibly not before the Census of England and Wales was taken at the start of April 1911 as I can only find 11 men of the 20th Hussers recorded – nine at Netheravon, one at Aldershot and one in London.

These include the 22 year old Lance Serjeant Leonard Hatton, 20th Hussars, single and born Willesden, Middlesex, who was recorded at the Cavalry Barracks Netheravon, Wiltshire.

Deane – no match and no obvious MiC as Dean or Deane. No joy with either surname spelling on the 1911 Census of Ireland.

Burrows – no obvious 1911 Census of Ireland match for a Henry Burrows.

C de W Taylor. The December 1914 Monthly Army List shows him in the Regiments Special Reserve as a 2nd Lieutenant on Probation, with seniority from 21st March 1914. None of the other names appear in this edition.

The next monthly Army List I had to hand was April 1915. This includes:-

2nd Lieutenants

Hatton, L, seniority 1st October 1914 (Others with same seniority date are Macintyre, A.C; Balfour, W.J and Wyborn R.F).

Attached

Temporary 2nd Lieutenants Burrows, H, seniority 23rd September 1914

Special Reserve

2nd Lieutenant Taylor, C de W, seniority 21st March 1914.

Also in the same category is a 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) R.E. Bion, with two seniority dates. The first is the 1st October 1914 – the same date as Hatton above. The other is the 25th March 1915. I assume the second date was when he was due to complete his probation.

But no Deane or anything that could be misconstrued or mistranscribed as Deane  - Bion is possibly the closest.

Hope that helps,

Peter

2nd Lieutenant H Dene appears to have been back with the Welsh Guards, probably in the UK judging from the set-up, at some point in early 1915 when the Welsh Guards were being created.

Humphrey Dene gets three mentions in this write up on the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards in their involvement in the Battle of Loos on the 27th September 1915.

The National Archive has Officers Records for a Lieutenant Colonel Humphrey Dene which covers from 1900 and through the Great War Period and also 1939 according to the catalogue entry at the National Archive.

Apparently part of the War Memorial at Horwood, Devon was donated by a Lieutenant Colonel Humphrey Dene D.S.O. Welsh Guards.

London Gazette has the appointment of Humphrey Dene to be Second Lieutenant in the Forfar and Kincardine Artillery, (Southern Division) from the 7th July 1900.

Looks like he joins a Reserve Regiment of Cavalry on the 25th September 1914.

Hope that helps,

Peter

Dear Everyone, very many thanks for all your help........lots and lots to absorb and a great help in filling in my spreadsheet gaps.

I'm not sure I fully understand the September 1914 London Gazette entries for both Burrows and Dene.  It says temporary second lieutenant commissions under the general headings Cavalry then "Reserve Regiments".  I am familiar with Special and Extra regiments for infantry and Reserve of Officers for retired Regulars but what does "Reserve Regiments" mean?  There is no such thing under individual regiments in the Army List.

Clarification would be most useful.

Again thanks everyone, your efforts are most appreciated.

1.  The Reserve Regiments of Cavalry:

2.  See Humphrey Dene's MIC in #8 - 13th Cav. Res. Rgt.
