On the battlefield “They Were Us”

Earlier this week, one hundred & one years after the battle there, a ceremony held at Semakh Station for the unveiling of a memorial to the Aboriginal members of the AIF, and in particular, to those who served with the Australian Light Horse.

 

Sponsored by the ALHA and chaired by their representative, the ceremony included speeches from the Australian ambassador and from the grandson of a veteran. Throughout, the translation from English was provided by the Chairman of the Society for the Heritage of World War I in Israel [Eran on this forum]. The event included musical interludes, one of which was the given on a didgeridoo. Wreaths were laid, and imediately after the statue was unveiled, one of the Aboriginal visitors paced white lillies in the hand of the Trooper who is represented tending the grave of one of his Mates.

the Australian Ambassador to Israel is HE Chris Cannan

and the grandson of the veteran who fought at Semakh was Mr Mark Pollard

There's a lot here, but to keep it short, Aboriginal decent depends of how much they were.

 

While numbers of natives were enlisted, these were mostly in Queensland, other states enlisted very few and later in the war. while some states didn't take any (Like WA) .

 

Natives or men of color could be any native with some in them. Like half cast, quarter cast and such, where a relative were natives either full or or some percentage natives.

 

The Govt Office of the admin of Aboriginals was responcible for all natives in that state, while Queensland, let these enlist later in the war, other states took there time and let a few in that were more white then black, but for every case there is some others who got in, with more or less as photos show.

 

Many men would not admit there native content, because of the sigmere, and as such to find many of these men can be hard to confirm. While my list is taken from many sources, there must be more then one mistake, and others missed.
