All depends on what those letters are. Regiment, name, service number are the most likely I can offer without any further details

hya, have recently purchased a set of of above medals, and was wondering what the letters on the edge of them mean ? have tried usual searched but no joy

The star medal should have a name, number, rank and regiment on the back. The other two medals should show the same name; the other details may differ.

Grab a magnifying glass and post what you find.

Also have a look at Long Long Trail ( link above) which will amongst countless other things tell you a little about your campaign medals.

Probably James Lewis Carter Z/134 RNVR Division: Tyneside. He has a file in the National Archives ADM 337/71/52 which has been digitised and can be downloaded for £3.50

EDIT His record is available on Ancestry if you search for James Louis Carter.

Also try FindMyPast under this spelling.
