Remembered Today:

Langemark, German mass grave

Evening All, I’m seeking information re the mass grave @ Langemark German cemetery.

After having the privilege of spending a day in the field on the Dig hill 80 site last year where numerous soldiers remains of various nationalities where recovered & seeing photos on the net of previous internment’s, where small coffins containing the soldiers remains are carried down steps into the grave via an opening under one of the stones at the front of the grave.
My question is Internally are all the soldiers remains interred individually in a walled tomb, or is this something that started in later years with the earlier burials being an ossuary?

Looking forward to receiving your feedback,
Paul

Hello,

The ossuary was closed when the German cemeteries were concentrated into the current ones in the mid 1950's. Since then, in principle all German WWI dead are buried in a hallway running next to the mass grave at Langemarck.

Hi Jan,

Thank you for your prompt & informative reply.

kind regards

Paul.
