chaz Posted 8 September , 2019 Posted 8 September , 2019 looking for information on a 1st Btn Suffolk Regt soldier killed in February 1915. He is buried in Sanctuary Wood. Ancestry have war diaries for the 1st Btn Welsh marked up on a piece of paper at the front and on cover sheets, this WD is indexed as 1st Suffolk. only thing I can tie up is on the day concerned the WD mentions Zilbeke, which is in the same area. my question is as this has been pointed out and reported for a year now, is it correct or wrong? need a Suffolk or Welsh specialist to confirm.

chaz Posted 8 September , 2019 Author Posted 8 September , 2019 (edited) From the LLT both arrived at Le Havre on 18th Jan 1915 Welsh Regt Then came under orders of and remained with 84th Brigade in 28th Division.Landed at Le Havre 18 January 1915. Embarked at Marseilles for Egypt and eventually Salonika, 24 November 1915. Suffolk Regt 17 November 1914 : came under command of 84th Brigade in 28th Division.18 January 1915 : landed at Le Havre.24 October 1915 : embarked at Marseilles and moved with the 28th Division to Salonika via Egypt both similar, were they combined and thus applies to both or has this been copied incorrectly? Wiki confirms the same. Edited 8 September , 2019 by chaz
clk Posted 8 September , 2019 Posted 8 September , 2019 (edited) Hi chaz, As you have access to Ancestry, might the Brigade HQ diary/appendices be of any help? February 1915 starts here. Regards Chris Edited 8 September , 2019 by clk
chaz Posted 8 September , 2019 Author Posted 8 September , 2019 thanks Chris didnt get that far as normally its printed orders when I look. so really, the 1st Btn Welsh piece of paper and covers should be noted for both regiments., surprising that others have reported to Ancestry an answer has not clarified then wouldnt have had to ask. presumably one officer was given the job of diarist rather than duplicate.
MaxD Posted 8 September , 2019 Posted 8 September , 2019 1st Suffolks up to embarkation for Salonika has been craftily hidden disguised as 6 Battalion Welsh Regiment with the number WO 95/2277/5 here on Ancestry (I'll put a note on the Suffolks search area) https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/60779/43849_2276_1-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=43849_2277_5-00000 Max
