MI ?

Mates,

Sorry about this but after some discussion last night with some mates over a few cups of tea, I was left in the dark about these questions?

And not having read the books but saw all the movies?

I does deal of a type with a Great War subject which started around that time;

What does MI (like MI5) mean?

If MI5 and MI6 are Intellegence, then what are MI1 to MI4?

If there a MI7 or Others?

If 007 is one of ten with a licence to Kill. then does first start at 001 or 00"0"

If then is the last men 009 or 00"10"

IF 007 is so well known can he be upgraded to 001 or down graded to 009

Just for fun

MI is indeed Military Intelligence as far as I know. I'm sure I've seen MI1-4 defined somewhere, but I can't remember where (have been reminded, Ben Schott's Original Miscellany, as per this link:.   https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,,-82187,00.htm).

All these are outlined in war office lists, and the number of departments vary throughout the years...for example 1923 only shows MI 1-5 and 1941 1-14 and a couple of other departments.

To add on from the 1940 list, August war office list 1941 shows...

MI 11....military security.

MI 12....liaison regarding censorship postal and telegraph.

MI 14....Germany and German occupied territories.

Going forward to the last list I have, 64, only shows...

1, 2, 3, 4, 7 (combat intelligence), 8, 10, 11 and 17 (cabinet matters affecting M.I. directorate).

One of Airey Neave's books is "Saturday at MI9" Saturday being his code name.

And he was supporting Resistance movements, not interrogating POW.
