It certainly refers to my man's grandmother and may or may not refer to his grandfather: I can read that the mother was "Mary Johnstone wife of William Johnstone who she declares is not the father of the child and further that she has not...." This might give you some ideas although I'm very uncertain! ....that she has not "either beene? or had any ... from in the ...? for about three yeare...." the long word on the 2nd to the last line might be an alternative to communication but I can't think what! [unsure of last word] That looks very likely. Thank you. I wonder what the last word is. There is something strange about all this. (This birth was in December 1870). Mary had five children that I have found. Two were registered as the children of William Johnston[e] and Mary Johnston[e] (also her maiden surname), the two oldest as illegitimate with no father named, plus this one. The death certificate of one of the illegitimate children gave William Johnston[e] as her father - but she died in 1944, so it may not be reliable. According to the birth certificates of the two legitimate children Mary and William married in Gretna in November 1864 - I can find no record of that. William registered the birth of the first of the two legitimate children - until I found that I was beginning to wonder if he really existed. Thanks Jane, But it can't refer to the next page. This is actually in the middle of the top row of the Births register.
