sadbrewer Posted 1 September , 2019 Posted 1 September , 2019 I just noticed the attached article about Mrs Hood having lost 6 sons killed, it was syndicated identically in many publications from late April to mid May of 1918. I read the thread on here about the 4 Hood Brothers and assumed it was related but can't tie up any connections...in fact I can't find a Mrs Hood in Hertford who had 19 children either. She could have remarried and some of the lads were killed under different names but it strikes me that were it to be true it would be better known....what do you think?
Mark1959 Posted 1 September , 2019 Posted 1 September , 2019 None of the Hoods on CWGC killed in WW1 has Hertford as address as NoK. Ditto SDGW. My family always told me that 3 of my GF's brothers were killed in WW1. Have failed to prove 1 was killed. Best guess it is a tall story but willing to be proved wrong.
HolymoleyRE Posted 1 September , 2019 Posted 1 September , 2019 Will need a bit of leg work to proove in entirety, but I amwondering if it really means Grandmother or another close Matriarchal figure...and as such a wider distribution of children....and the papers have embellished the tale. 12 Millers Yard, Hertford is real place, on the 1901 Census it has Charles Osmotherley & his wife Annie and some sons, with differing surnames, Osmotherly, Aston, Peacock, they are still there in 1911. Charles' father James was a career soldier, and died in Gravesend in 1912. Gravesend, Strood and other close area of Kent seem to be a hub for the Osmotherley name notably another Charles Osmotherly born in 1831... Who married a Alice Ann Hood. There is only one Osmotherly on CWGC and that is Albert Osmotherly from Gravesend, but there are fair few Kentish Regiment Osmotherlys, and quite a few were wounded, equally there are a few Kentish Hoods killed. So perhaps a Matriarchal Mrs Hood who counted distributed nephews and Grandchildren as Sons... Or we have been Hoodwinked by the press... Andy
