Remembered Today:

Busteed of the NI Horse & RIF

I bought a nurses album yesterday, which had belonged to a VAD called van Oppen who nursed at St James VAD Hospital New Barnet and Crawley Cottage Hospital.

Several contributions are from Private Richard BUSTEED; North Irish Horse 2285 ; Royal Irish Fusiliers 41546 Private (probably 9th Bttn).

Is anyone researching these units, and is there a free online Irish census that would enable me to trace him?

He signed the Ulster Covenant. See here.

http://www.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenantsearch/index.asp

Type in his name and it will come up. And it should also give you a digital image of his signature.

Just thought of this!

Which Crawley?

Thanks for the link Des. The signatures are the same, so this immediately gives me lot to go on. He gives his address as 34 Salisbury Street, and signed at the City Hall Belfast. However, it looks as though his spell in hospital improved his handwriting, which is much more ornate in the album.

Beppo,

All I have for Crawley is this entry:

Many thanks for your great kindness during my stay at Cottage Hospital, Crawley

Yours sincerely Pte S Fisher, 4th Royal West Kents, Sept 10th 1918

Thanks Kate

I had hoped that it would be Crawley, Sussex. That town had a Cottage Hospital, now demolished. I used to live about 100 yards from the site. I have never heard of it holding wounded soldiers, although I suppose it could have.

Of course, there are other Crawley's.

There are no complete online Irish Censuses. I have the 1851 remnants on line at my site. There are parts of Cork and other Republic of Ireland countries on line for 1901. Some streets are online for Belfast in 1901 but only for the people that the researcher was interested in.

If you want the 1901 census you find it at PRONI in Belfast.

The 1901 and 1911 census can be found in the NA in Dublin.

The 1901 and 1911 Irish census can also be found by visiting any Morman or Latter Day Saints Temple. You might have to hire it. You can view it for 6 weeks after it arrives. Costs very little or they might just have in their storage. You will have to know in which Town or area(Townland) or part of BElfast (street, ward etc) Belfast etc. is divided in different reels.

It has quite a large number of reels and only on microfilm.

If you need more information contact me as I have a lot of information on Genealogy researching in Co. Antrim and Belfast.

Irish Censuses 1831part of Caven), 1841(part of L'derry), 1851(part of Antrim), 1901 is complete and so is 1911. Nothing for the other years.

Kate,

I had a quick scan to see if his name cropped up in the 9th Bn diary, as some ORs often appear, but no joy as yet, I'll check the regimental journals at the weekend. It may be worth contacting Amanda Moreno, Curator of the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum in Armagh they may be able to provide some further information.

If you are going on the Pals tour in April, there is an exhibuition of men who served in the Irish Fusiliers that is being shown at the Zonnebeke museum , this has been on show in Armagh and is transferring across in April. You may find some additional information there.

Regards

Andy

Hi Kate,

This from Jean McCarthy(nee Moore). One of my Co. Antrim Mailinglist users.

Hope it is of help.

There is a 1901 Belfast street directory on my website. I looked up Salisbury Street for you. Salisbury Street was in the Windsor Ward of Belfast. The LDS Film number is 0807536. Sometimes the leading zero is not used but you will need to use the leading zero when filling in the pink order slip. The PRONI film number is: MIC 354/1/106.

There is also a streets and ward page on my web site. If you does not know the ward the street was in then use this page first of all. Once the ward is known then go to the streets directory page to find the relevant film numbers.

I have recently updated the street directory. However, there are still a few film numbers missing. I am trying to track these down at the moment. I hope this helps. Jean McCarthy nee Moore

I believe the 1831 remnants include parts of Co Londonderry ... as our gr-gr-grandfather appears in Kilrea parish in that census.

I've been told that the next available census for Northern Ireland, after the 1911 release, will be for the census enumerated in 1937 ... in 2037, if the 100-rule holds until then :-( .

You are correct the 1831 contains the remnants for L'Derry and 1841 for Cavan. There are the old age pension records from around 1908 which make use of the original 1841 and 1851 censuses. There also small bit for the 1831,8141,1851 census Cork, Fermanagh etc. Very small bits.

The next census to be released in N.Ireland will be that of 1936 as the 1926 census records were destroyed in the Belfast Blitz with a lot of other important records.

Besides the Ulster Coventant there are other records of interest and one of those is the Electrol Roll and the Absentee Electrol Roll.

Hi - Richard Busteed was My Mums Uncle and they lived in Salisbury Street which is off the Dublin Road in Belfast. I happened to find this blog by chance and would appreciate it if you could share anything you know. Richard Joined the North Irish Horse as a young boy and he was wounded in France. For some reason he never came home or contacted his family again and we have been trying to find out what happened to him after the Hospital discharged him. My Mum maiden name is Busteed. Would appreciate any help you can give me. Maybe there is something in the Album that may give us a clue??
