Images 130-133 on Ancestry give an account of the action at Gouzeaucourt.

My Gt Uncle (2nd Btn CG) was one of the casualties, I have walked the path of that day. I have a written account I did for the anniversary of his death, which I can post later.

Hi I am researching a soldier who was killed that day in France.  He lives a couple hours drive from where I live.

Any information about the circumstances surrounding his death would be appreciated

Hi

As has been mentioned above, the War Diary is readily available and if you haven’t looked at it yet I would recommend that you do. Gt Uncle Arthur only went out in June ‘17, straight to the action north of Ypres. I read each day of the diary, following their march down to France, support action at Bourlon Wood through to his final day. It is very easy to follow and well worth doing.

U Arthur was never found but I have visited local cemeteries where other members of his Btn are buried. Does your chap have a known grave? I may have a photo. My son and I followed his path that day before moving on to the Louverval Memorial where he is listed.

Here is a copy of my notes for 30th Nov (annotated because I have used them for reference!). It is only an overview but may help you. Also a map I used on my visit.

Ps my profile photo is from Gouzeaucourt, an unknown from 2nd Btn CG who died that day.

First time I have seen such a comment in a war diary, but seems a fair summing up, from image 133 of the war diary on Ancestry

I had forgotten that bit! The report of the day certainly takes you into the action.

U Arthur was no 4 Company. Seems they had the worst if it (if there was a worst on that day), out to the right when reinforcements were re-assigned.
