Woodsc Posted 22 August , 2019 Posted 22 August , 2019 Hello All I am researching a soldier who served and died with the 8th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment and struggling to determine if he is the soldier remembered on the Alkborough Memorial Lincolnshire. Pte William H Pool (37183) KIA 25th October 1916 I am trying to clarify his birth place as there appears to be a little confusion ~ Census information records him being born in Wootton Lincolnshire but he is also listed as being born Alkborough Lincolnshire on another site under Soldiers who Died in the Great War . He is remembered on the Alkborough Memorial as Harry Poole which adds to the confusion but he is listed on his MIC as William Henry (Harry) Pool. I just wondered if anyone had a copy of the book 'Soldiers who Died in the Great War' for the Gloucestershire Regiment and could confirm if he is listed as being born in Alkborough Lincolnshire. Hope someone can help ~ Thank You Colin

Michelle Thanks Michelle That is probably why he is listed on the memorial by birth ~ I just struggle as to why on both the 1901 and 1911 census information he is recorded as being born Wootton which casts a little doubt. May I ask your views on how reliant you feel the information is in the SDGW books from your experience? Colin

Promenade Hello Promenade Many Thanks for the information really appreciated ~ may I ask the source of this information? or is it from your personal records. The reason I ask is when I do the write up for this soldier for my personal use I usually make reference to any sources of information. Thank You Colin

I've seen one book published during the war, the war dead of a local small town which is riddled with mistakes. Michelle
Mark1959 Posted 23 August , 2019 Posted 23 August , 2019 There is a WFA card for a pension claim from his mother - her address is Twigmoor Farm, Scawby, Brigg. That is equidistant between the two. So possibly neither of the places. Brigg seems to be the place where his birth was registered
