PJS Posted 18 August , 2019 Share Posted 18 August , 2019 Can anyone shed any light on the possible name of the officer who's signature is shown below? He is the author of the "narrative" from May 27, 1918 in the 1/Sherwoods war diary but it is not any of their listed officers. My guess is that he was attached to the 8th Division HQ because they were also located in Roucy along with the 1/Sherwoods who were in divisional reserve that day. A bigger section of writing below in case that helps: Looks like C. Roulsell, Maj. to me but that is obviously not correct and I am out of ideas. charlie962 Posted 18 August , 2019 Share Posted 18 August , 2019 I thought perhaps Roskell but the only hit was William Joseph Lt Col, Staffs, who got a SWB 1917 Charlie
PJS Posted 18 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 18 August , 2019 Thanks Charlie. I tried all combinations of Ro***ll on Ancestry and FMP and found nothing. Peter
MaxD Posted 19 August , 2019 Share Posted 19 August , 2019 Maj GRP Roupell VC was appointed GSO II of 8 Div on 9 May 1918 - possibility although the initials aren't quite right. Max

Max Max, Thank You. Genius! From Headquarters Branches and Services: General Staff (May – June 1918). WO 95/1678/3: Not happy with the initial "C" and it seems that he did have a brother called Charles (Charles Frederick de Coetlogon Roupell). But then this from his marriage cert: Got to be him ... right? Peter
MaxD Posted 19 August , 2019 Share Posted 19 August , 2019 He is the only relevant Roupell that appears in the London Gazette. GPR relinquished the rank of Lt Col in 1921. C'est lui! Max
