Great War Truck Posted 16 August , 2019 Share Posted 16 August , 2019 (edited) I have this interesting postcard of a Crossley and RAF crew at a funeral. I think it is in Mesopotamia as it has Arabic writing on the licence plates. Would anyone like to agree or disagree with me, or please offer their own suggestions as to the location? Thanks Tim Edited 16 August , 2019 by Great War Truck
seaJane Posted 17 August , 2019 Share Posted 17 August , 2019 Potentially also Palestine?
Great War Truck Posted 17 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 17 August , 2019 Yes, you are quite right. It could have been taken in Palestine. Thanks.
pete-c Posted 18 August , 2019 Share Posted 18 August , 2019 (edited) Or even Iraq? EDIT: if I had a brain I'd be dangerous! Iraq of course came later. Could this Crossley still have been in use at this time? I expect a uniform expert could pin down the date. Great War Truck Posted 18 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 18 August , 2019 Thanks. I will try the uniform on a different thread. Thanks.
PJS Posted 19 August , 2019 Share Posted 19 August , 2019 I wonder if it might be Egypt? License plate is "similar" to the one on the motorcycle of this thread about old Cairo: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/267384-photographs-of-old-cairo-1915/?do=findComment&comment=2709135 C = Cairo? The arabic writing appears to be just a replication of the western numerals and letters (technically I suppose that should be the other way round since it's their license plate). Great War Truck Posted 20 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2019 Thank you. That is very helpful. It looks very similar to the Cairo one. Cheers Tim
Great War Truck Posted 26 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 26 August , 2019 Yes, definitely Egypt. The C on the Crossley stands for Cairo. Thanks for everyone's input. Tim

Tim Thanks for closing this out. How did you definitely id the license plate to Egypt? Peter
Great War Truck Posted 29 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 August , 2019 I found a WW2 thread on the historic military vehicle forum which was very helpful: http://hmvf.co.uk/topic/40136-wd-number-plates-ww2-middle-east/ which took me to the Egypt page of the licence plates of the world website, which although sounding a bit nerdy is actually very interesting. http://www.worldlicenseplates.com/ This is all very helpful for planning my next project. Thanks for everyone's input.
