Dear collective Expertise of the Great War Forum community,

Medal collectors endeavour to secure unusual medal groups for their Collections. This is one.

Medal collectors, once they have the unusual medal group in their hot little hands, strive to obtain that elusive Portrait of the recipient. I have managed to do that.

But can someone please unearth a Military Portrait of Morgan Dockrell, please?

Morgan Dockrell was Born 13 May 1883, London; son of Dr Benjamin Morgan Dockrell (1860-1920), a dermatologist.

Ed. St. Paul's and Trinity Coll., Dublin (BA 1903). His 1902 Portrait was published in an article which decribed him as 'one of the best-known swimmers in the south of England'.

11 Jun 1903 commnd. 2Lt Cork Royal Garrison Artillery (Militia). 1905 transf. Cardigan RGA (Militia). Captain of the Otter Swimming Club, London, 1903-04.

Circa 1903, Dr Dockrell, his father, went bankrupt to the tune of ten thousand Pounds. Possibly as a result, Morgan Dockrell was commn. 2Lt ULIA on 5 Aug 1905...

There followed a flawless Indian Army career with glowing Reports. He became a Cantonments Officer, latterly at Secunderabad, and was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind 2nd class in silver (L. G. 3 Jun 1925). He had been twice MiD during the Great War as a staff officer in Mesopotamia, and was A/Major and 2iC 2/2 Rajput L. I. for Third Afghan (IGS medal and clasp).

Lt-Col 5 Aug 1931. Awarded 35 Jubilee and 37 Coronation medals1813327180_Dockrell1901Top.jpg.caf348af7d11213a1f7dfcc4c6cbaa3a.jpg493226285_Dockrellgroup.jpg.f38f416c466cf3171461029e0f21685a.jpg934226896_Dockrellnaming.JPG.1ff5f90741d7b21633da5a592a7e3f43.JPG. Retired 10 Apr 1938. Was accepted into the the Hurlingham Club. Died, Pimlico, 30 Jan 1952: possible suicide...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Afraid I cannot get the photo you are looking for

The most obvious place would be at his marriage in which I assume he would have been in uniform, but although there are a lot of announcements in various places, none have a photo. You could try to get beyond the limited number of newspapers on FmP

His death is odd too in lack of newspaper articles. The Times said there would be an inquest, but did not seem to report it the next day. And the only other mention I could find was the Herald which said he fell from a window

Dear corisande,

Thanks for going to the trouble of looking around, as it were.

Yes, his death was indeed 'odd' as it was superflous.1115389639_DockrellDeath1952.jpg.70f20187300189bd2ce32632c5960fc4.jpg

Kindest regards,

Kim.
