53rd Division HQ Batman

Hi all. I have recently purchased a pair of late issue (1974) medals to a chap in the KSLI. According to his medal roll he also served with the Herefords and the RWF, but next to all of these it says he was attached to 53rd (Welsh) Division HQ as a batman. He was later attached to 20 Corps HQ presumably in the same capacity. I can understand the roll of a batman in a battalion (i.e. officer's servant) but would he have been associated with a specific officer at a divisional HQ? I am just wondering in what capacity he would have worked. Presumably he would not have seen "action" in the same way as an "ordinary" Private would have done, that being said he may have had some interesting experiences working for the Brass Hats. Any information about this roll would be greatly appreciated. I have attached the medal roll. The name is Stepney.
