Battlefield relic identification. Help wanted.

This one is for a friend who found the object. I  believe it was on the Somme. It's about 10 to 12 cm long. Probably not an oil bottle. My thoughts are something of a shell detonator. Anyone know what it is?

It might be the nose percussion rod for a German GrZ 17 fuze. Not at all sure, as it seems a little big and not quite right,  but have a look;
