Hi Folks, Can anyone help me find any information on these two Royal Welsh Fusiliers please. (First photograph) Cpl G Howarth. (Second Photograph) Pte R.E Cousins. The names are written on the reverse of the postcards. I'd like to Identify thier Battalions so I can add them into the correct sections of my postcard album.

Kind regards Simon.

A check of the RWF MICs shows only a Reginald Ernest Cousens - previously 32805 Essex Regt then 55938 RWF. Discharged to Commission 28/5/18. Seems to the only Cousins even though spelt differently in the RWF with initial R with an MIC.

This man looks to be the man born 1/3/1895 in 1939 list - note says "Retired Lt 2nd Royal Welsh" - 1939 in Birmingham.. Born Penge, Kent an living in Hornchurch Essex in 1911 with family. Died 15/6/59 Birmigham (probate)

Needs further research.

Looks like your man doesn't he! But is he the man I posted details of?

There are several possible G Howarth,  all Georges, with MICs. Plus another without an MIC

Searching medal rolls on Ancestry for 'Howarth' and 'Royal Welch Fusiliers', I could only find one BW & V Medal entry (got same result searching MICs with those two terms):

73418 Pte George Taylor Howarth, 2nd Bn RWF.

No Star, so overseas war service after end 1915. Apologies if I've missed obvious records in the search, probably be worth double-checking.

Hi Pat. Thank you for your help. I'm wondering if he's something to do with recruitment? He seems to have recruitment ribbons on the side of his Service Cap?

Pondering on Cousins-Cousens. If medal roll shows Essex then RWF and you can put him in China pre-WW1 with RWF then Cousens is very unlikely to be Cousins

I did wonder about those ribbons (and indeed, whether they were flowers), but to no avail - recruiting is an interesting possibility. Have read about such things in passing, but don't know what they would actually have looked like. I associate them - perhaps wrongly - with sergeants, though?

Hi All

There is a Pension Ledger Record for 73418 George Taylor Howarth RW F. I don't subscribe to Fold 3 it says "Military Service Region,  North West England. Rank Pte."

Hi All,

Came across this one:-

There is a SWB record for a Pte. George Howarth 58888 (SWB Card shows list J/578 on page 117 of the rolls) , 5th Gn Bn RWF.SWB  No.175821. Enlisted 1.6.15. Disch. sickness 19.4.17. Did not serve overseas.

Would he have had to serve abroad to be a recruiting Cpl? I have no idea.

Regards Barry
