Remembered Today:

Shoulder strap - Cheshire

Recommended Posts

The pic is dated 1919, of a man 51 years of age, cap badge clearly Cheshire Regiment and shoulder title clearly Cheshire - but what is the V?  No service records apparent.

V as in Victor or V as in Five or????

Grateful for help

I believe the shoulder badge was for the Cheshire volunteer training Corps. Happy to be corrected though.

I think that they later became a ‘volunteer battalion’ of the Cheshire Regiment as part of the reorganisation of the VTC

Thank you Frogsmile but the date 1919 doesn't sit well with that thought??

The new Volunteer Bns of the Cheshire Regt weren't disbanded until 1920.

Dates apply as per Graham’s statement.  By that time the erstwhile VTC battalions were mostly wearing their affiliated regiment’s insignia but with ‘V’ appended to titles. It was in effect a resurrection of the pre-1908 volunteer battalions, although not all units received new insignia before disbandment.

Thank you, clear now.  I was aware of the 1920 disbandment date but was also fixed on the 1908 absorption of the Volunteers and Militia hence my confusion  of the two.

Grateful for the clarity.
