In the left hand side of the photo, Private Joseph Daniels is looking back at the camera. 905046 Pte Daniels, Joseph; enlisted on the 27 April 1916 in the 194 Bn. He served in France with the 4th Div MG Coy and was discharged on 20 June 1919. 22nd Battalion bivouaced behind the line during the Battle of Amiens. An under-strength platoon of the 5th Australian Division is addressed by an officer during the Battle of Amiens, 8 August 1918. Despite its diminished size, the Platoon has three Lewis guns, reflecting the greater emphasis on light machine guns in the BEF at this stage of the conflict.
