RAF Other Ranks Index Cards at TNA (no longer used)

Recommended Posts

I have just come across some notes from some years ago about how find WW1 RAF other ranks records at The National Archives. The procedure started by finding the serial number using index cards which were on microfiche. I remember that the images of my grandfather's index cards and several others near to it were illegible. When I enquired about seeing the originals I was told that they had been disposed of. (As it happens this was no obstruction to finding my grandfather's record since he had originally been in the RFC and I knew his RFC serial number. However I did wonder if other researchers were stuck.)

I was very surprised that the originals had been disposed of. It seems risky when it was not possible to check that all the images were clear. Have there been other examples of archives disposing of originals after microfilming or digitisation?
